EU VAT & Import Duties Explained (DDP for Wholesale & Projects)
For Designers & Project Buyers (European Union)
VAT & Import Duties Explained — European Union
This page is intended for designers, galleries, and project buyers within the EU. Retail orders follow standard international shipping terms.
For a global overview, please see: Oil Painting Import Duty & Tax Guide for International Buyers.
1) Import VAT on Original Oil Paintings
Oil paintings imported into the European Union are generally subject to Import VAT, with the rate determined by the destination country. Customs duties on original artworks are typically low or zero, depending on classification.
Import VAT is assessed at the time of customs clearance, based on the declared value, shipping cost, and the applicable local VAT rate.
2) VAT Collection & Delivery
Import VAT is an import-stage tax, separate from domestic VAT registration. Couriers may request VAT payment during clearance when standard shipping terms apply.
- VAT is assessed at import, not as a retail checkout tax
- Rates vary by EU member state
- Customs handling is part of the clearance process
3) DDP as a Long-Term Partnership Advantage
For professional buyers managing commercial or multi-piece projects, logistics planning is critical to cost control and scheduling.
At OKPainting Studio, DDP (Delivered Duty Paid) is not offered as a retail option, but can be arranged for wholesale and project partners, subject to destination country, order scale, and shipping method.
When DDP is coordinated for qualified partners:
- Import VAT is prepaid
- Customs clearance is handled in advance
- No VAT or duty is requested upon delivery
- Landed costs are fixed and predictable
Retail Orders
- Standard international shipping terms apply
- Import VAT may be collected at clearance
- Procedures follow destination country rules
Wholesale & Project Orders
- Logistics planned at project level
- DDP may be arranged where appropriate
- Import responsibilities confirmed in advance
In Summary
- Import VAT applies to most EU imports
- Customs duties on original artworks are generally low
- DDP can be coordinated for wholesale and project partners
- Long-term cooperation enables predictable landed costs
