GST & Import Duties Explained — Australia

1) Importing Oil Paintings into Australia
When oil paintings are imported into Australia, customs clearance is handled at entry. Original artworks often have low or zero import duty depending on classification.
Australia applies GST (Goods and Services Tax) to many imported goods. GST is assessed as part of the import process, based on declared value and shipping details.

GST handling can differ depending on shipment value, seller channel, and collection method. In some cases GST is collected during import clearance; in other cases it may be collected at checkout by a platform.
